⚗️ Metabolomics

The large-scale study of small molecules and metabolic products.

Metabolomics

Genomics tells you what could happen. Transcriptomics tells you what is being transcribed. Proteomics tells you what proteins are present. Metabolomics tells you what actually happened. It is the large-scale study of small molecules, called metabolites, in a biological sample. These include sugars, amino acids, lipids, and hundreds of other compounds. They are the products of metabolism, and they reflect the current state of the cell.

Metabolomics uses techniques like mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance to identify and quantify metabolites. A single sample can contain thousands of compounds, spanning a wide range of concentrations. Separating and measuring them is analytically challenging. The data is complex, and interpreting it requires computational tools and biological knowledge.

The applications are broad. In medicine, metabolomics identifies biomarkers for disease, predicts drug response, and reveals metabolic pathways that are disrupted in cancer or diabetes. In agriculture, it improves crop quality and stress tolerance. In microbiology, it studies how microbes interact with their environment. In nutrition, it tracks how diet affects metabolism.

Metabolomics is the closest we get to a snapshot of physiology. It captures the chemistry of the moment, and it changes with diet, exercise, disease, and time of day.
