Project Management

Project management is the discipline of planning and controlling resources to complete a project on time, on budget, and to the required quality. In construction, that means coordinating designers, contractors, suppliers, and inspectors through a process that can last years.

A project manager builds a schedule and a budget, then tracks them relentlessly. They identify risks before they become problems. They manage changes, because changes are inevitable. They communicate with the owner, the design team, and the trades. When something slips, they adjust.

Tools help. Gantt charts show tasks and dependencies. Critical path analysis identifies what must happen on time and what has slack. Cost reports track spending against the budget. BIM models coordinate design and construction. But tools do not manage projects. People do.

Good project managers are calm under pressure. They listen more than they talk. They know when to push and when to wait. They also know that the project is not the only thing that matters. Safety, ethics, and relationships matter too.
