🤺 Fencing

A sport involving sword fighting with blunted weapons.

Fencing

Two competitors face each other on a narrow strip, wearing masks and protective clothing, and attempt to land touches with blunted swords. That sport is fencing. It combines speed, tactics, and precise timing.

Three weapons exist: foil, épée, and sabre. Each has different target areas and right-of-way rules. Bouts are fenced to a set number of touches or a time limit. Electronic scoring systems register valid hits. Footwork—advances, retreats, lunges—creates the distance and tempo battles that define the contest.

Training develops explosive movement, hand speed, and the ability to read an opponent’s intention. Strategy involves setting up attacks, defending, and countering in fractions of a second. Fencing rewards calm decision-making under rapid pressure.

The phrase “en garde” still marks the moment the mental duel becomes physical.
