In games, to spawn is to appear in the world. Characters, enemies, and items all spawn at designated points or according to set rules. A player might spawn at the start of a match, respawn after dying, or watch waves of opponents spawn from a distant gate.
The word comes from the biological sense of producing offspring, but in digital spaces it simply means to come into existence. Map designers place spawn points carefully so that teams begin in balanced positions. Poor spawn placement can decide the flow of an entire match.
Players talk about spawn camping when one team waits near the enemy’s entry point and eliminates them the moment they appear. They also discuss spawn timers, the delay before a defeated character can return. In some games the spawn system itself becomes a strategic layer. Controlling the areas around spawn points can lock the other team out of the map.
Outside games the word occasionally appears when something suddenly shows up in large numbers, but the gaming usage remains the dominant one.
