Every monitored shipment needs a unique handle. A tracking number is a distinct code assigned to a shipment so that its progress can be queried in carrier and shipper systems.

The number links physical scans to digital records. Customers enter it on websites or apps to see estimated delivery and recent events. Internal teams use it to investigate delays, damages, and proof of delivery.

Formats vary by carrier and mode. Barcodes and QR codes encode the same identifier for rapid scanning. Protecting tracking numbers from casual public exposure can reduce theft risk for high-value parcels. The tracking number is the simple key that unlocks shipment visibility.
