🕌 Ottoman Empire

A vast empire centered in Turkey from 1299 to 1922.

Ottoman Empire

From a small Anatolian principality a vast empire emerged. The Ottoman Empire, lasting from around 1299 to 1922, at its height controlled southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, with its capital at Constantinople after 1453.

A centralized administration, military slavery system, and flexible incorporation of diverse religious communities characterized Ottoman rule for centuries. The empire was a major Islamic power and a key player in European diplomacy and warfare. Gradual territorial losses in the nineteenth century preceded its final dissolution after the First World War.

Ottoman archives, architecture, and art provide rich evidence of its complexity. Historians have moved beyond decline narratives to examine adaptation, provincial dynamics, and cultural life. The republic of Turkey and several Middle Eastern and Balkan states emerged from its territories.

My family is from Istanbul and the Ottoman legacy is everywhere. The architecture, the cuisine, even the way the city is laid out.

1299 to 1922 is an incredibly long run for an empire. Over 600 years. That's hard to comprehend.

The article covers the basics but the Ottoman Empire's role in WWI and its dissolution is a huge topic on its own.
