A printer is a device that produces physical copies of digital documents. It takes a file from your computer and puts it on paper. Inkjet printers spray tiny droplets of ink. Laser printers use static electricity and toner. Thermal printers heat special paper. 3D printers build objects layer by layer.

The first printers were mechanical typewriters. Then came dot matrix, which hammered pins against an ink ribbon. Inkjet and laser printers followed in the 1980s. Today, most offices have laser printers. Homes often have inkjets. Photo printers use dye or pigment inks for accurate color.

Printers are frustrating. They jam. They run out of ink. They refuse to connect. But they remain essential for contracts, shipping labels, and school assignments. The paperless office was predicted decades ago. It has not arrived.
