An Individualized Education Program, or IEP, is a tailored plan for a student with special needs. It outlines goals, services, and accommodations. The plan is legally binding in many countries. Schools must follow it.
An IEP team includes the student's parents, teachers, a special education specialist, and sometimes the student. They meet to assess needs, set goals, and decide on services. Speech therapy, extra time on tests, and assistive technology are common. The plan is reviewed at least annually.
The process can be stressful for families. Meetings are full of jargon. Disagreements happen. But a well-written IEP can transform a student's experience. It turns vague concerns into concrete supports. It holds schools accountable. It gives parents a seat at the table.
