🌱 Germination

The process by which a seed develops into a new plant.

Germination

A seed is a plant in a hurry to wait. Germination is the moment it stops waiting, takes in water, and starts to grow.

The process begins with imbibition. Dry seed coats absorb moisture, swell, and wake up enzymes that break stored starch and protein into usable fuel. A root tip, the radicle, pushes out first and anchors the seedling. Then a shoot rises, hunting for light. Most seeds need three things: moisture, warmth, and oxygen. Some also need light, others darkness, and many stay dormant until they have been through cold or scarification.

Why timing matters on a farm

A field that emerges evenly is easier to manage from the first spray to the last harvest. That is why growers pay close attention to seedbed preparation, planting depth, and moisture at sowing.
