👥 Y'all

Contraction of "you all".

Y'all

Y’all is the contraction of “you all.” It serves as a second-person plural pronoun, filling a gap that standard English leaves open. While “you” can refer to one person or many, y’all makes the plural explicit.

The form is strongly associated with Southern American English, though it has spread far beyond the region. People use it in speech and in writing when they want to address a group without ambiguity. “Are y’all coming?” is clearer than “Are you coming?” when more than one person is involved.

Y’all can feel warm and inclusive. It often carries a friendly or familiar tone. Some speakers outside the South have adopted it deliberately for that quality. Others still hear it as a regional marker.

Grammatically it behaves like any other pronoun. Possessive forms and further contractions exist, but the basic y’all remains the most common. Its staying power comes from usefulness: English needed a clear plural “you,” and y’all continues to provide one.
