😴 Anesthesia

A medication that induces insensitivity to pain during surgery.

Anesthesia

Surgery would be impossible if patients felt every incision. Anesthesia is the controlled, temporary induction of insensitivity to pain and, in general anesthesia, loss of consciousness and protective reflexes, allowing operative procedures to proceed safely.

Local and regional techniques block nerves serving a limited area while the patient remains awake. General anesthesia affects the whole brain and requires airway management and continuous monitoring of vital signs. Anesthesiologists choose agents and doses according to the procedure, the patient’s health, and expected duration. Recovery of consciousness and protective reflexes marks the end of the anesthetic state.

Modern anesthesia is remarkably safe when delivered by trained professionals with appropriate monitoring. Residual effects such as nausea or sore throat are common but usually transient. The specialty continuously refines drugs and techniques to shorten recovery and reduce complications.
