🔬 Resolution

The amount of detail an image holds, measured in pixels.

Resolution

Print a photo at billboard size and it falls apart. The pixels become visible. That failure is a resolution problem. Resolution measures how much detail an image holds, usually expressed as the number of pixels across its width and height. A 1920 by 1080 display packs just over two million pixels. A 48-megapixel camera sensor captures far more.

More pixels means finer detail, but only up to a point. A high-resolution file displayed on a low-resolution screen still looks like a low-resolution image. A low-resolution file stretched onto a 4K monitor looks soft and blocky. The display and the source have to match. Photographers, printers, and screen manufacturers all use different resolution standards, which is why a file that looks sharp on your laptop can look terrible on a poster.

Resolution in practice

Resolution is not the same as quality. A sharp, well-lit 12-megapixel photo beats a noisy 50-megapixel one every time. Pixels are the container. Light, focus, and composition are what fill it.
