🍞 Communion

A Christian rite sharing bread and wine.

Communion

Communion is the sharing of bread and wine in remembrance of Christ. It is also called the Lord's Supper, the Eucharist, and the Breaking of Bread. Jesus instituted it at the Last Supper. He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said: This is my body. He took the cup and said: This is my blood of the covenant. He told his disciples to do this in remembrance of him. The church has done it ever since.

Communion is a sacrament. It is a means of grace. It is a mystery. The bread and wine are signs. They point to Christ's body and blood. They point to his sacrifice on the cross. They point to his presence with his people. Different traditions understand this differently. Catholics believe in transubstantiation. The bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. Lutherans believe in consubstantiation. Christ is present in, with, and under the bread and wine. Reformed Christians believe in a spiritual presence. Baptists and others see it as a memorial. The meaning varies. The command is the same. Do this.

Communion in scripture

Communion is a family meal. It is a foretaste of heaven. It is a bond of unity. It is a proclamation of Christ's death until he comes. It is a moment of intimacy. It is a moment of awe. The bread is broken. The wine is poured. The people eat and drink. They remember. They give thanks. They are nourished. They are united. They are sent out. Communion is not just a ritual. It is an encounter. It is a gift. It is the body and blood of Christ. It is the love of God. It is the communion of saints. It is the church at the table. It is the Lord's Supper. And it is for you.
