🌴 Tropical Storm

A storm with organized thunderstorms and strong winds.

Tropical Storm

When a tropical depression strengthens and its sustained winds reach 39 to 73 miles per hour, it is classified as a tropical storm. At this stage the system receives a name and begins to show more organized banding of thunderstorms.

Tropical storms can still produce heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal flooding. Some remain at tropical-storm strength; others continue to intensify into hurricanes. The transition from depression to storm marks the point at which the system is considered a significant threat that requires closer monitoring and potential warnings.

Formation requires warm ocean water, moist mid-level air, and low wind shear. Once named, the storm is tracked carefully by meteorological centers. Impacts can extend well inland through rainfall even if the strongest winds remain offshore.
