➡️ Bow

The front part of a ship or boat.

Bow

The sharp end cuts the water first. The bow is the forward part of a ship or boat, shaped to reduce resistance and to provide buoyancy when pitching in waves.

Designers choose bulbous bows, flared bows, or fine entry shapes according to speed and sea conditions. Anchors, bow thrusters, and mooring equipment are commonly fitted in the bow area. Lookouts and collision-avoidance sensors also orient forward.

Heavy weather puts the greatest loads on the bow. Green water over the forecastle, slamming, and ice impact all test structural strength. Crews secure everything forward before entering rough seas, and damage to the bow can compromise watertight integrity and speed.
