📐 Loss Adjuster

An expert who assesses the value of a claim.

Loss Adjuster

After a fire or storm, someone must establish what was damaged and what it is worth. A loss adjuster is a specialist who investigates the cause and extent of a loss, quantifies the damage, and helps determine the amount payable under the policy. The role overlaps with that of a claims adjuster, with emphasis on valuation.

Loss adjusters may be employed by insurers or work independently. They inspect property, review invoices and inventories, interview the insured, and prepare detailed reports. On large or complex losses they coordinate engineers, forensic accountants, and other experts.

Their findings influence settlement negotiations and, if necessary, formal appraisal or litigation. Professional standards and, in some jurisdictions, licensing requirements apply. Accurate, well-documented adjustment protects both the insurer’s purse and the insured’s right to fair indemnity.
