Online learning delivers education through the internet. It ranges from short tutorials to full degree programs. Students log in from home, a library, or a cafe. The teacher may be thousands of miles away. The format has grown from a niche option to a mainstream one.
It comes in two main types. Synchronous learning happens in real time, with live video classes and instant chat. Asynchronous learning lets students work on their own schedule, watching recorded lectures and posting to forums. Many programs mix both.
The advantages are clear: flexibility, access, and lower cost in some cases. The challenges are also clear: isolation, technical problems, and the discipline required to stay on track. Completion rates for online courses are often lower than for in-person ones. Support systems matter as much as content.
