A player is assigned a specific role with defined responsibilities in attack and defense. That role is a position. Positions organize the team so that space is covered and tasks are distributed.
Examples include goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, and forward in soccer, or point guard, forward, and center in basketball. Each position demands a particular blend of skills, physical qualities, and tactical understanding. Modern systems often require positional flexibility so that players can interchange during play.
Coaches select line-ups by matching player strengths to positional needs and by considering the opponent. Young athletes may try multiple positions before settling on one that fits their attributes. Understanding positional duties is the foundation of team play.
A team of talented individuals still needs clear positions to function as a unit.
