🕍 Rabbi

A Jewish teacher and spiritual leader.

Rabbi

A Jewish community looks to a trained teacher for guidance in law, ethics, and the interpretation of sacred texts. That teacher is a rabbi. The title means my master or my teacher.

Rabbis are ordained through a process of advanced study and authorization. They lead services, deliver sermons, preside at life-cycle events, and offer pastoral counseling. In many communities they also serve as administrators and public representatives. Ordination of women is accepted in some branches and not in others.

The rabbinic tradition stretches back to the Pharisees and the formative period of the Talmud. Study remains central to the role; a rabbi is expected to continue learning throughout life. Different movements—Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and others—shape the training and expectations. The rabbi embodies the Jewish commitment to ongoing interpretation of Torah.
