⚖️ Balance

Giving fair representation to all relevant perspectives.

Balance

Not every story has two equal sides, yet most benefit from more than one perspective. Balance is the effort to represent the relevant viewpoints fairly so that readers or viewers can form their own judgments.

In practice this means seeking comment from those criticized, including competing analyses of data, and avoiding loaded framing that privileges one side. Balance does not require giving equal time to fringe claims that lack evidence. Editors weigh newsworthiness and proportionality when deciding how much space each perspective receives.

Critics sometimes confuse balance with false equivalence. Professional newsrooms distinguish between giving fair hearing to legitimate stakeholders and amplifying discredited assertions. The goal remains a report that informed people on different sides would recognize as complete, even if they disagree with the conclusions readers may draw.
