A computer is an electronic device that processes data according to instructions. It takes input, stores it, manipulates it, and produces output. The first electronic computers filled rooms and weighed tons. Today, a smartphone in your pocket is millions of times more powerful.
Computers share a basic architecture: a processor, memory, storage, input devices, and output devices. The processor executes instructions. Memory holds data temporarily. Storage keeps it permanently. Input devices like keyboards and mice let you interact. Output devices like monitors and printers show results.
Types of computers
- Personal computers: desktops and laptops
- Mobile devices: smartphones and tablets
- Servers: provide services to other computers
- Embedded systems: inside cars, appliances, toys
- Supercomputers: used for climate, physics, AI
Computers do not think. They follow instructions blindly. The intelligence comes from the people who design the hardware and write the software. A computer is a tool, and like any tool, its impact depends on how it is used.
