A student is someone enrolled in an educational institution to learn. The word covers a wide range: a five-year-old learning to read, a teenager in high school, an adult returning for a degree, a retiree taking a painting class. Anyone engaged in formal learning can be called a student.
Students are not a uniform group. They come with different backgrounds, motivations, and challenges. Some study full time. Others work and study. Some have support at home. Others care for siblings or children of their own. The same lesson lands differently depending on who is in the room.
The role of the student has evolved. Once seen as a passive recipient of knowledge, students are now expected to participate, ask questions, and take responsibility for their learning. That shift is not complete. Old habits and institutional structures still push toward compliance.
