💅 Slay

To do something exceptionally well.

Slay

To slay is to perform so well that the only possible response is admiration. The word once meant to kill. In modern slang it means to dominate a look, a stage, or a moment so thoroughly that everyone else is left impressed.

Drag culture and ballroom scenes helped the shift. A performer who walked a category with perfect precision and presence would be told they slayed. From there the term moved into everyday speech. A friend who nails a presentation, serves an outfit, or delivers a sharp comeback can all be said to have slain.

The tone is celebratory rather than violent. It carries energy and approval. People use it as both a verb and an exclamation. “You slayed that” is high praise. “Slay” by itself can function as encouragement, the way someone might shout “go” from the sidelines.

Unlike older terms of excellence, slay feels current and a little theatrical. It suggests not just competence but flair. The person who slays does more than succeed. They make the success look effortless and stylish.
