Humility is a modest view of one's own importance. It is not thinking less of yourself. It is thinking of yourself less. It is the opposite of pride. In biblical terms, humility is recognizing your dependence on God. It is acknowledging that everything you have is a gift. It is the foundation of faith.
Jesus modeled humility. He washed his disciples' feet. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death on a cross. He said the greatest among you will be your servant. Humility is not weakness. It is strength under control. It is the ability to serve without seeking recognition. It is the willingness to admit mistakes. It is the openness to correction.
Humility in scripture
- Proverbs 11:2: with humility comes wisdom.
- Micah 6:8: walk humbly with your God.
- Philippians 2:3: count others more significant than yourselves.
- 1 Peter 5:5: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
- Matthew 23:12: whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Humility is counterintuitive. The world rewards pride. It rewards self-promotion. It rewards arrogance. But God opposes the proud. He gives grace to the humble. Humility is the path to wisdom. It is the path to peace. It is the path to salvation. A humble person can learn. A humble person can grow. A humble person can be used by God. Pride prevents all of that. Pride closes the mind. Pride hardens the heart. Pride destroys relationships. Humility opens the door. It says: I do not have all the answers. It says: I need help. It says: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. That prayer is the beginning of everything. Humility is not optional. It is essential. It is the posture of the soul before God.
