Before the match the referee calls the team leaders to the center for the coin toss. Those leaders are the captains. On the field the captain serves as the link between coach, teammates, and officials.

Captains motivate, organize, and set behavioral standards. They may adjust tactics within the coach’s framework and represent the team in discussions with referees. Selection often reflects respect from peers as much as superior skill. Some captains lead quietly through example; others are vocal and directive.

The role carries extra pressure because teammates look to the captain during adversity. A good captain remains composed, communicates clearly, and prioritizes the team’s needs. The armband or equivalent marker is a visible reminder of that responsibility.

Leadership on the field frequently determines whether talent turns into results.
