In human sexuality, the refractory period is a resting phase after orgasm during which a man cannot achieve another erection or orgasm, no matter how much stimulation is provided. It is part of the sexual response cycle and varies greatly between individuals and with age.
The refractory period can last from minutes to hours, or longer in older men. Women generally do not have a comparable refractory period and may be capable of multiple orgasms. Physiologically, the refractory period involves the release of prolactin and other neurochemicals, and a temporary decrease in sexual arousal. It should not be confused with the refractory period of a neuron.
