The process of inspecting, cleaning, and modeling data.

Data Analysis

Data analysis is the process of inspecting, cleaning, transforming, and modeling data to discover useful information, draw conclusions, and support decision-making. It is not just running numbers. It is asking the right questions, choosing the right methods, and interpreting the results honestly.

The process usually starts with a question. What are we trying to learn? Then data is collected, cleaned, and explored. Analysts look for patterns, test hypotheses, and build models. Finally, the findings are communicated in a way that non-experts can understand. The last step is often the hardest.

Types of data analysis:

Tools range from spreadsheets to programming languages like Python and R, to specialized platforms like Tableau and Power BI. But tools do not make an analyst. Judgment does. A good analyst knows when a correlation is meaningless, when a sample is biased, and when the data simply does not support the conclusion someone wants to draw.
