🧵 Stringer

A freelance journalist contributing to a news outlet.

Stringer

News organizations cannot staff every town or conflict zone permanently. A stringer is a freelance journalist who regularly contributes reports from a particular location or on a particular topic without being a full-time staff member.

Stringers are paid by the piece or by arrangement and often supply both text and photographs. They provide on-the-ground presence that would otherwise be unaffordable. In return they typically receive less institutional support, training, and legal protection than staff correspondents.

Many distinguished journalists began as stringers. The arrangement works best when the newsroom maintains clear communication, fair pay, and shared safety protocols. Stringer networks remain essential for covering distant or sudden events.
