🐎 Mongol Empire

The largest contiguous land empire in history, founded by Genghis Khan.

Mongol Empire

In the thirteenth century mounted armies from the steppes built the largest contiguous land empire ever known. The Mongol Empire, founded under Genghis Khan, eventually stretched from East Asia into Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Military organization, mobility, and a willingness to incorporate conquered peoples fueled rapid expansion. The empire later fragmented into khanates, yet the period of unity facilitated trade and communication across Eurasia along routes sometimes called the Pax Mongolica. Cities were destroyed; others flourished under new overlords.

Persian, Chinese, and European sources record both the devastation and the administrative adaptations of Mongol rule. Historians continue to reassess the empire’s economic and cultural impact beyond the well-known military narrative. The scale of conquest remains unmatched in contiguous land terms.
