🏺 Mesopotamia

An ancient region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Mesopotamia

Between two rivers an early urban civilization took shape. Mesopotamia, the land between the Tigris and Euphrates, saw the rise of cities, writing, and complex states from the fourth millennium BCE onward. Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian cultures successively dominated the region.

Cuneiform writing on clay tablets recorded administration, literature, and law. Monumental ziggurats and palace complexes reflected centralized authority. Irrigation agriculture supported dense populations, while trade linked the area to the Gulf, Anatolia, and beyond.

Archaeological excavation and the decipherment of cuneiform have made Mesopotamia one of the best-documented early civilizations. Its legal collections, epic literature, and mathematical texts influenced later traditions. The region’s history illustrates both the possibilities and the vulnerabilities of river-based urban societies.
