🐎 Equestrian

Sports involving riding horses.

Equestrian

A rider and horse move together over a course of fences or through a precise pattern of movements. Those disciplines fall under equestrian sport. Success depends on the partnership between human and animal.

Major Olympic equestrian events include dressage, eventing, and jumping. Dressage tests harmony and obedience through set movements. Jumping demands accuracy and scope over obstacles. Eventing combines dressage, cross-country, and jumping across three phases. Other branches include endurance riding, reining, and vaulting.

Training develops the horse’s strength, balance, and responsiveness while refining the rider’s seat, aids, and judgment. Horse welfare is a growing focus of regulation and public attention. Competitions are scored on performance, faults, or time depending on the discipline. The relationship built in daily work becomes visible under the pressure of the arena.

In equestrian sport the horse is an athlete, not equipment.
