🏷️ Attribution

Identifying the source of information in a report.

Attribution

Readers need to know where information comes from. Attribution is the practice of identifying the source of a fact, quote, or paraphrase inside a news story so that the audience can judge its reliability.

Clear attribution names the person or document and, when relevant, their position or expertise. Anonymous attribution is used sparingly and only when the information is important and the source faces genuine risk. Vague phrases such as “sources say” without further context weaken a story.

Strong attribution builds trust and protects the news organization if facts are later disputed. It also allows follow-up by other reporters. Most style guides devote detailed rules to the wording and placement of attribution, reflecting how central the practice is to credible journalism.
