IRL stands for "in real life." It is used to distinguish the physical world from the online world. "We met online, but we hang out IRL now." It is a text abbreviation. It is common in gaming, social media, and everyday chat. It is a way to say, "This is not the internet. This is the real world."

IRL is a reminder. The internet is not everything. There are people, places, and things outside the screen. IRL is where you eat, sleep, and breathe. It is where you hug your friends. It is where you get rained on. The abbreviation is a small anchor. It keeps you grounded.

IRL is not always positive. Some people prefer the internet. They find it easier. They find community. There is nothing wrong with that. But IRL is still there. The sun still rises. The coffee still brews. The abbreviation just names it. It says, "Log off sometimes. Go outside." That is good advice.
