📦 Container

A standardized metal box used for shipping goods.

Container

Standardized steel boxes transformed global trade. A container is a reusable intermodal box, usually metal, designed to hold cargo and to be moved seamlessly among ships, trains, and trucks.

The most common sizes are twenty-foot and forty-foot units, with high-cube and specialized variants for refrigerated, open-top, or tank cargo. Corner castings allow secure lifting and stacking. Once sealed, the container protects goods from weather and reduces handling damage.

Container availability and imbalance between trade lanes create ongoing operational challenges. Inspection, repair, and cleaning keep the fleet serviceable. Virtually every major port and inland terminal is now built around the dimensions and handling requirements of these boxes.
