♻️ Permaculture

A design system creating sustainable and self-sufficient gardens.

Permaculture

Some garden designs aim to work with natural systems rather than against them. Permaculture is a design approach that creates productive, self-sustaining outdoor spaces by observing and mimicking patterns found in nature. It emphasizes closed loops of energy and resources, diverse plantings, and minimal external inputs.

Key principles include stacking functions so each element serves multiple purposes, capturing and storing energy, and valuing diversity. A permaculture garden might combine fruit trees, understory shrubs, ground covers, and edible herbs in layered plantings that support one another. Water is managed through swales and mulches; fertility comes from compost, manure, and nitrogen-fixing plants.

The method suits both large properties and small urban plots. Observation comes before action. Designers map sun, wind, water flow, and existing vegetation, then place elements accordingly. The goal is a resilient system that provides food, habitat, and beauty while requiring less ongoing intervention over time.
