👥 Man vs. Man

A conflict between two characters.

Man vs. Man

Man vs. man is a type of external conflict in which the protagonist struggles against another character. The opposition of wills or interests drives the plot.

The conflict may be physical, as in a fight or contest, or psychological and social, as in a rivalry, lawsuit, or battle of wits. Detective versus criminal, hero versus villain, and competing lovers are familiar patterns. The antagonist need not be evil; conflicting goals are enough. Resolution comes when one prevails, when they compromise, or when the struggle transforms both.

Man vs. man is one of the oldest and most straightforward conflict types. It lends itself to clear dramatic structure and to the exploration of character through opposition. Even stories dominated by other conflicts often include a man-vs.-man strand that personalizes the stakes.

When one character’s desire directly blocks another’s, the conflict is man versus man.
