Cargo does not walk ashore by itself. A stevedore is a worker or contractor engaged in the loading, unloading, and stowage of cargo on and off ships.
Stevedores operate cranes, forklifts, and other gear, secure cargo, and follow stowage plans. In some ports the term refers to the company that provides the labor and equipment rather than the individual worker. Skill and experience reduce damage and speed the ship’s turnaround.
Stevedoring is physically demanding and can be hazardous. Safety rules, training, and proper equipment matter. The efficiency of stevedores directly affects port time and therefore ship operating costs. Good cooperation between ship’s crew and stevedores keeps cargo work safe and on schedule.
