💼 Freelancer

A self-employed journalist selling work to outlets.

Freelancer

Not every journalist draws a staff salary. A freelancer is a self-employed reporter, writer, photographer, or producer who sells individual stories or projects to news organizations rather than holding a permanent staff position.

Freelancers pitch ideas, negotiate fees and rights, and manage their own equipment, insurance, and taxes. They supply flexibility and specialized skills that newsrooms may not maintain full-time. In return they absorb income uncertainty and often receive less legal and security support than staff colleagues.

Many major investigations and foreign reports now depend on freelance contributions. Professional freelancers maintain the same ethical and accuracy standards as staff journalists. Clear contracts covering kill fees, expenses, and liability have become essential as the volume of freelance work has grown.
