🔧 Tool

An implement used to carry out particular manual functions.

Tool

A tool is an implement that extends what your hands can do. A hammer drives a nail. A chisel cuts wood. A needle pierces fabric. The simplest tools have no moving parts. More complex ones use gears, motors, or compressed air. In craft work, tools fall into a few broad groups: cutting, shaping, joining, measuring, and finishing.

Good tools share certain qualities. They are comfortable to hold, made from materials that last, and designed for the job they do. A sharp chisel is safer than a dull one because it cuts where you aim it. A well-balanced hammer reduces fatigue. A measuring tool that reads clearly saves mistakes. Cheap tools often cost more in the long run. They break, slip, or injure. Buying one good tool at a time is a better strategy than filling a drawer with bargains.

Tool categories

Maintenance is part of tool ownership. Oil metal parts. Sharpen cutting edges. Store tools dry and organized. A rusty, dull tool is a hazard, not a help.
