💧 Saturation

The intensity or purity of a color.

Saturation

Saturation describes the intensity or purity of a color. A fully saturated red is vivid and bright. Desaturate it and it moves toward gray. In digital color models like HSL, saturation is one of three coordinates, alongside hue and lightness. Adjusting it changes how colorful a color appears without changing its basic identity.

High saturation grabs attention. It works well for accents, calls to action, and children's products. But a screen full of saturated colors becomes exhausting. Most professional palettes use saturation strategically: a few vivid accents against a field of muted tones. Photographers and filmmakers often reduce saturation to create mood. A desaturated landscape feels somber or nostalgic. A slightly boosted one feels lively.

Working with saturation

Saturation is not the same as brightness. A color can be bright but pale, or dark but intensely saturated. Designers adjust both to control emphasis and mood.
