A scale is an ordered sequence of pitches that moves by step from one note to its octave. The most familiar are the major and minor scales of Western music, but many other scales exist, including modes, pentatonic scales, and various non-Western collections.
Scales provide the raw material for melodies and the basis for harmonic systems. Practicing scales builds technical facility and familiarizes the ear with the pitch relationships of a given key or mode. Composers draw on scales both as strict frameworks and as starting points for freer invention.
The pattern of whole steps and half steps defines each scale’s character. Changing one interval can transform a bright major scale into a darker minor or modal form. Understanding scales is fundamental to improvisation, composition, and analysis.
