Not every creature in the garden is welcome. A pest is any organism that damages plants, reduces yields, or spoils produce. Insects such as aphids, caterpillars, and beetles are common culprits, but pests also include certain mites, nematodes, slugs, birds, and even mammals that browse or dig.
Damage appears as chewed leaves, distorted growth, sticky honeydew, or sudden wilting. Identifying the actual cause matters because many insects are beneficial predators or pollinators. A few aphids rarely warrant action; heavy infestations or protected crops may need intervention.
Healthy plants resist damage better than stressed ones. Crop rotation, physical barriers, and encouraging natural enemies reduce pest pressure. When control is needed, start with the least disruptive methods. Observation and timely response keep most problems manageable without constant chemical use.
