🦴 Fracture

A break or crack in a bone.

Fracture

An X-ray shows a clean break across a bone after a heavy landing or collision. That injury is a fracture. It ranges from hairline cracks to complex breaks that displace bone ends.

Contact sports, high-speed falls, and overuse in endurance disciplines all produce fractures. Immediate signs include pain, swelling, deformity, and loss of function. Stabilization and medical assessment are the first priorities. Healing time depends on location, severity, and the athlete’s overall health.

Treatment may involve casting, bracing, or surgical fixation. Rehabilitation restores strength and mobility before return to sport. Some fractures, especially in the lower limbs, require careful load management to avoid re-injury. Prevention focuses on technique, appropriate surfaces, and progressive training loads.

A fracture stops training abruptly and tests an athlete’s patience during recovery.
