🪨 Soil

The natural medium of minerals and organic matter in which plants grow.

Soil

Under every successful garden lies a complex living medium. Soil is a mixture of mineral particles, organic matter, air, water, and countless organisms. Sand, silt, and clay determine texture; humus and decomposed material influence fertility and structure.

Healthy soil drains yet holds moisture, supplies nutrients, and supports a web of bacteria, fungi, and invertebrates. Gardeners improve poor soil by adding compost, manure, or other organic matter. Avoiding compaction and excessive tillage preserves the natural structure that roots need.

Simple tests reveal texture and pH. Different plants prefer different conditions—acid lovers, lime-tolerant species, heavy feeders. Matching plants to existing soil, or amending thoughtfully, produces better results than fighting the site. Over time, consistent additions of organic matter transform even difficult ground.
