寫作（S）是指撰寫文本以交流想法的活動。

寫作是將文字寫在紙上、螢幕或牆上，以此傳達某種訊息。它看似孤獨，但其實具有社交性。每一篇文字都預設著讀者，即使這個讀者只有作者本人。購物清單、情書、法律文件和小說，都具有相同的基本動機：將思想具象化。

創作過程很少是線性的。作家們會進行腦力激盪、撰寫草稿、刪減、重組，然後重新開始。初稿幾乎從來都不是完美的，而且它本來就不是為了追求完美。真正的創作在於修改。專業人士的修改次數比業餘人士多得多。他們深知初稿只是素材。

寫作也是一項可以遷移的技能。經常寫作的學生能夠學會組織思維、發現論證中的弱點並考慮其他觀點。即使在科技領域，雇主也將寫作能力列為最受青睞的技能之一。工程師撰寫報告，護理師繪製圖表，經理撰寫電子郵件。寫作品質直接影響工作的評價。
