🗄️ Storage

The retention of information in memory over time.

Storage

Once information has been encoded, it must be retained over time if it is to be available later. Storage is that retention of encoded information in memory.

Different systems support storage over different timescales: synaptic changes for short intervals, systems-level consolidation for longer periods. Sleep plays an active role in stabilizing certain forms of storage. Capacity limits are most evident in short-term and working memory; long-term storage appears effectively unlimited for practical purposes.

Storage is not static. Memories can be modified when reactivated, and interference can degrade them. Biological conditions—age, stress hormones, neurological disease—affect the integrity of storage. Techniques that improve encoding and reduce interference support more reliable storage. Without storage there would be no learning that outlasts the present moment.

What is stored today becomes the knowledge that shapes tomorrow’s perception and decision.
