⛈️ Storm

A violent atmospheric disturbance with strong winds.

Storm

Violent weather is part of life at sea. A storm is a disturbed state of the atmosphere marked by strong winds, often with rain, thunder, or snow, and in marine usage often specifically a wind force of 10 on the Beaufort scale (48–55 knots).

Storms generate high seas, reduce visibility, and make deck work dangerous or impossible. Ships may alter course or reduce speed to ease motion and avoid damage. Forecasts and weather routing help masters stay clear of the worst conditions when schedules allow.

Storm preparation includes securing cargo and loose gear, checking watertight closures, and briefing the crew. Even large ships can be damaged by extreme storm seas. Respect for storm warnings remains a basic mark of good seamanship.
