🌐 Semantic Field

A group of words related by meaning.

Semantic Field

Related words cluster in the mind and in the lexicon. A semantic field is a set of words that share a common area of meaning, such as kinship terms, color words, or cooking verbs.

Within a field, items divide conceptual space and stand in relations of contrast, inclusion, or overlap. Languages partition fields differently—classic examples include varying color-term systems. Field analysis helps lexicographers and anthropologists describe cultural categories.

Teaching vocabulary by semantic fields can improve retention and precision. Historical change within a field may force neighboring words to shift meaning. Semantic fields thus offer a mid-level structure between individual word senses and the entire lexicon.
