A missed premium payment does not always end coverage immediately. A grace period is a defined interval after the premium due date during which the policy remains in force even though payment has not yet been received. If the premium is paid within the grace period, coverage continues uninterrupted.
Grace periods are common in life and health insurance and are often mandated by statute. Thirty or thirty-one days is a typical length. Claims arising during the grace period are usually payable, with the unpaid premium deducted from the benefit.
Once the grace period expires without payment, the policy lapses. Reinstatement may be possible under specified conditions, often requiring evidence of insurability. Policyholders should not rely on the grace period as a routine extension of the due date; it is a safety net for occasional late payment.
