🔱 Fork

A garden tool with prongs for loosening soil and lifting plants.

Fork

A garden fork is a sturdy tool with four or more sharp tines set into a long handle. It loosens compacted soil, lifts root crops, turns compost, and moves mulch without the slicing action of a spade. The open tines slide between roots more easily than a solid blade, reducing damage to plants.

Border forks are smaller and lighter for work in tight beds. Digging forks have longer, stronger tines for heavier soil. Stainless or carbon steel heads resist bending; wooden or fiberglass handles absorb shock. Keep the tines clean and sharp for efficient work.

Use a fork by driving it into the soil with foot pressure, then rocking it back to break the ground. The tool is indispensable for dividing perennials and harvesting potatoes. Proper technique saves the back and speeds the job.
